Tony Long Retires

Anthony A. (Tony) Long  retired at the end of June but will continue to be active as a Professor of the Graduate School while he pursues his extensive program of lectures and conferences and visiting appointments and ongoing research.

Tony joined the Department as a full professor in 1982 and was awarded the endowed title of Irving Stone Professor of Literature in 1991. He served as an affiliated professor of the Department of Rhetoric and Department of Philosophy. In addition to his renown as a researcher and writer on Ancient Philosophy and Greek literature, Tony has been an outstanding teacher at all levels, from large lower-division lecture courses on Western Civilization and Greek Civilization to upper-division courses in Greek and Latin and graduate seminars on a wide range of topics in Ancient Philosophy, and he also has served the campus and Department in many capacities, including a term as Department Chair (1986-1990) and his recent three-year stint on the Budget Committee (the all-important Academic Senate committee on academic personnel). In recognition of his distinction and service, Provost Janet Broughton presented Tony with the Berkeley Citation at a reception in his honor on April 22.

Tony completed his higher education at the University of London (BA with first class honors in 1960, PhD in 1964).  He taught at the University of Otago, New Zealand, University of Nottingham, and University of London before being appointed as Gladstone Professor of Greek at the University of Liverpool in 1973. He has held numerous fellowships and visiting appointments in the U.S., Europe, and New Zealand, and will spend two months in Fall 2013 as Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong.

Tony is the author or editor or co-editor of 12 books (so far), and has a book on Greek models of mind forthcoming and two books under contract and in progress (translations with commentary of works of Seneca and Plotinus).
