Former Students Honor Tony Long
November 30, 2010
Ancient Models of Mind: Studies in Human and Divine Rationality, a collection of papers from the conference held in Berkeley in 2007 to honor Tony Long on his 70th birthday, has been published by Cambridge University Press. The co-editors are Andrea Nightingale of Stanford University and David Sedley of Cambridge University. Eight of the twelve contributors hold Berkeley PhD's with dissertations directed by Tony Long, and seven of these are now full professors at leading universities in the US: Sara Abbel-Rappe, James Ker, Kathryn Morgan, Andrea Nightingale, Gretchen Reydams-Schils, Allan Silverman, Stephen White, Kenneth Wolfe.
From the cover copy: "How does god think? How, ideally, does a human mind function? Must a gap remain between these two paradigms of rationality? Such questions exercised the greatest ancient philosophers, including those featured in this book: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics and Plotinus. This volume encompasses a series of studies by leading scholars, revisiting key moments of ancient philosophy and highlighting the theme of human and divine rationality in both moral and cognitive psychology. It is a tribute to Professor A. A.Long, and reflects multiple themes of his own work."
