Noted author addresses graduating classicists

May 23, 2009

The annual Commencement ceremony for the Department of Classics and the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology took place Friday, May 15. Five AHMA graduate students and  nine Classics or Classical Archaeology graduate students received the MA or PhD degree, while 31 undergraduates in our four majors received the BA. The highlight of the program was the moving commencement address by  award-winning author and critic Daniel Mendelsohn, who also holds a PhD in Classics from Princeton University.

In response to numerous requests, Daniel Mendelsohn has kindly consented to the publication of the full text of his speech on the Classics web site.
