Updated: New Fellowship and Scholarship Funds Honors Corinne Crawford

October 8, 2007

Following suggestions from a planning committee that included students and faculty, the Department of Classics announced on August 27 the creation of the Corinne S. Crawford Memorial Graduate Student Support Fund as one aspect of our remembrance of a student whose intellect, enthusiasm, and warmth impressed so many.

The initial endowment is funded by several early pledges from faculty that are expected to be matched under the Chancellor's Challenge Matching Program. By the terms of the fund, preference for fellowship support will be given to those pursuing a specialization in Roman studies. The two preferred uses of the award will be for travel to Roman lands for research and study and/or for final dissertation-year support. Since the Department's graduate students already have access to funds restricted to those traveling to Greece and Greek-speaking areas, the Crawford Fund will be an important new mechanism for equal treatment of the Roman side of the Department.

On October 8, the Department announced that it will also honor Corinne's great impact on and concern for undergraduates by the establishment of the Corinne S. Crawford Memorial Award Fund, which will provide need-based scholarships (administered by the Office of Financial Aid) to current majors or intending majors in the Department of Classics, with a preference for female students.

Donations are now welcome to build up the balance of both Memorial Funds so that the annual income will be substantial. All donations made by faculty, students, or staff are eligible for one-to-one matching from the Chancellor. Donors may download a gift form   or make the donation online to the Department of Classics noting the wish to contribute to the Crawford Memorial Fund for Graduate Support (fund number W6121) and/or the Crawford Memorial Award Fund for Undergraduate Scholarships (fund number W6143), and noting also, if applicable, any status (faculty, staff, current student) that qualifies for the matching program.
